William Hill Advert Linked Betting to Sexual Success<\/strong><\/p>\n

An advert for a wagering firm seen on the yohaig code<\/a> dating app Tinder has been prohibited for linking betting to sexual success.<\/p>\n

The advertisement for William<\/a> Hill, which was sent as a message to users, read: “Stuck in the good friend zone? You won’t be for a lot longer if you utilize this Cheltenham [horse racing] free bet bet9ja’s welcome offer<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

It was followed by a link to download<\/a> the William Hill app.<\/p>\n

But the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) stated it needs to not appear again in its existing<\/a> kind.<\/p>\n

It stated that, according to advertising rules, gambling advertisements must not link wagering<\/a> to “seduction, sexual success or improved attractiveness”.<\/p>\n

“We thought about that the text … suggested that those who bet would be most likely to develop a friendship into a sexual relationship and for that reason connected gaming with sexual success,” it said.<\/p>\n

William Hill at first defended<\/a> the yohaig code<\/a> March advert after a client grumbled.<\/p>\n

The company stated clients who registered<\/a> would “get in into a relationship with William Hill”, and the advert was expected to relate this promotion code<\/a> to the nature of business they were marketing on – Tinder.<\/p>\n

It said it was not its objective to link betting<\/a> to sexual success<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, upon reflection it agreed the advertisement might have been misinterpreted<\/a> and took it down willingly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

William Hill said: “We take on board what the ASA have actually stated about this promotion code<\/a> particular advert and have eliminated it from blood circulation.”<\/p>\n

Tinder on the other hand stated it had reviewed<\/a> the advertisement before releasing it, finding it was not socially reckless, offending or targeting minors.<\/p>\n

One, the Bishop of St Albans, Dr Alan Smith, stated he was “left speechless” by ads like William Hill’s.<\/p>\n

“The gambling industry’s approach to self-regulation appears farcical as more of these adverts are exposed. I fear some betting companies are now operating under a ‘do not get captured’ mentality.<\/p>\n

“The ASA’s robust<\/a> action should be a wake-up call to the industry<\/a>.”<\/p>\n
