Genoa Loans 22yo David Ankeye to Rapid Bucharest

Nigerian centre Ankeye has joined Romanian SuperLiga club Rapid Bucharest on loan from Italian Serie A side Genoa. The agreement will see Ankeye remain with the Romanian outfit until the end of the current season.

Ankeye, 22, arrived in Bucharest on Monday and is expected to replace Aaron Boupendza, who is no longer part of Rapid Bucharest’s plans. The move is aimed at providing Ankeye with more regular playing time, as he has struggled for minutes at Genoa this season, featuring in only five games as a substitute and accumulating 52 minutes in total.

Reflecting on his move, Ankeye expressed enthusiasm for his new opportunity, stating “I know Rapid as a historic club in Romania. I followed the championship since my time in Moldova. I’m very motivated to be here and can’t wait to give my best for the team and its fans.”

Last season, Ankeye made his mark in European competitions, scoring three goals, including two against BATE Borisov and one against Servette Geneva. Rapid Bucharest currently sit sixth in the Romanian top flight with 32 points from 22 matches.
